Jari Niemelä
I am professor of urban ecology and dean of the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences. My research focuses on urban ecology with two approaches:
- the study of ecology in cities, i.e. issues related to the occurrence of biodiversity in cities and factors affecting it, and
- multidisciplinary approach integrating ecology and social sciences.
In addition to research, I am working hard to interact with the society to disseminate my research results to managers, planners and decision makers. By doing so, I want to make sure that my research contributes to sustainable urban development.
My main publication in the field of urban ecology is the book that I was editor-in-chief for: Niemelä et al. (2011): Urban ecology, patterns, processes and application. Oxford University Press Urban Ecology
I’m also chairman of WWF Finland, chairman on the Nature Panel (www.ymparisto.fi/luontopaneeli) which is the national panel of the Intergovernmental Panel for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) and member of Future Earth Finland. I am also involved in the Urban Academy platform.
